About Dutch Electricity Market and Home Batteries

The "Salderingsregeling" (Net Metering)

The Dutch net metering scheme allows solar panel owners to offset the electricity they feed into the grid against their consumption on a one-to-one basis. However, this scheme will be phased out starting from 2027, making self-consumption and energy storage more valuable.

Dynamic Pricing in the Netherlands

Many Dutch energy providers now offer dynamic contracts with hourly price changes based on the EPEX Spot market. This creates opportunities for arbitrage: charging the battery when prices are low and using the stored energy when prices are high.

Battery Value Drivers

The main value drivers for home batteries in the Netherlands are:

  • Increased self-consumption of solar energy
  • Price arbitrage between peak and off-peak hours
  • Protection against the phaseout of the salderingsregeling
  • Energy independence and backup power
